NJ HealthWorks Scaling Apprenticeship

NJ HealthWorks Scaling Apprenticeship Grant Program

The New Jersey Healthworks Scaling Apprenticeship Program is helping to educate and mentor thousands of workers in NJ’s healthcare industry.  The grant is working with major employer partners and community colleges in the state to introduce and expand the apprenticeship model.  The goal of this grant is to fill a pipeline of qualified skilled workers into in-demand occupations through a consistent structure, improve productivity and ultimately the quality of patient care.  It is a win for the communities and to all the parties involved.

Apprenticeships are all about learning while doing and learning from others in your industry. You get a chance to put your skills into practice and gain more confidence in a working environment.

What’s in it for me?

Once accepted into the program, you will be placed with an employer who will pay you a salary.  You will get a jump start on a career while earning recognized industry credentials that will prove your ability, prepare you for more job responsibilities, and improve future career opportunities through promotions and pay increases.

What is my commitment?

You can start a new career in healthcare in as little as five months through no-cost healthcare training.  You will be required to complete a number of hours in the classroom and hours at your place of employment.  If you meet the requirements, the NJ Healthworks Grant may cover the cost of your training.

Why should I invest my time in this program?

We want to see you succeed.  Your success is our success.  You will be assigned a mentor who will take you “under their wings.” Your mentor will show you the how’s and why’s of mastering your skills.  You will also work with a Success Coach who will help you be successful in your journey.

New Jersey HealthWorks Scaling Apprenticeship is sponsored by a $12 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration (Federal Award ID. No. (FAIN): HG-33026-19-60-A-34). The US DOL grant includes additional match funds amounting to over $500,000 to support On-the-Job Training and other employer assistance from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development GAINS Project.

Apprenticeship Opportunities

An apprenticeship is not an internship, nor is it a short-term training program. Apprentices work full-time and are paid a wage that is subject to minimum wage regulations but may begin below that of the incumbent (current) worker. As the apprentice hits milestones such as completing a certain number of program hours or demonstrating job competencies, his or her wages increase according to the agreement signed by the employer and the apprentice at the beginning of the program.

Key elements of a registered apprenticeship program are:

    • The apprentice is a full-time, benefit-receiving, paid employee of the sponsoring organization from the start of the program.
    • The apprenticeship program includes at least 2,000 hours of On-the-Job (OJT) training and a minimum of 144 hours of Related Technical Instruction (RTI), which can take place in a classroom at the workplace, a local college or education provider.
    • The apprentice must be paid at least the minimum wage, with wages progressing as the apprentice moves through the program.
    • On-the-job training must be structured, planned, and coordinated and cannot simply be a job shadowing experience or a short-term employee induction program.
